Localist
BACKGROUND
Helps locals find out what’s good in their area through print guides, a website and a mobile application. Locals have the opportunity to support local businesses and organisations through buying from them and promoting them on the website via social media. It also provides a platform for locals to connect with each other. Being owned by NZ Post, all Localist profits stay in New Zealand.
HOW SUSTAINABILITY IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE ORGANISATION
Localist is essentially a celebration and supporter of strong, connected communities. Localist in Auckland is focused on promoting local trade for social and economic benefit. Positive spinoffs are that people do not have to travel as far to get the things they need. And it supports the local eco-system that offers a place to buy locally made products and services. Localist offers not for profit community groups with free listings on the site and in the books – the first book donated 27 free ads worth $300 each. In future books, this figure will grow.
Localist aims to work in partnership with local businesses rather than the traditional mindset of selling advertising to them. It works closely with agencies such as the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to support the growth of New Zealand's smaller businesses, thereby naturally building its own sustainability. Localist also focuses on educating SMBs on new and emerging media that are a lower-cost ways of promoting their products and services to new audiences.
A dedicated team actively pursues community relationships and seeks organisations to which Localist can offer services for free. All sales staff are trained during their induction in sustainability so that they are able to talk about this with Localist customers.
