Kina NZ Design and Art Space

Based in New Plymouth, KINA NZ Design & Art Space is a boutique design store, art gallery and on-line shop that proudly supports New Zealand-made art and design work by Kiwi designers, craftspeople and artists.

KINA showcases not only special one-off objects of beauty but is also a popular destination for affordable gifts and pieces that express the individual spirit and style unique to New Zealand.

KINA, now owned by local artist Rebecca Mooney, has been a strong advocate of sustainability since its establishment in 1999.

“It's true we're greenies at heart and wouldn't have it any other way. It's not alright to leave it to others. We all need to make an effort,” says Ms Mooney.

The challenge

KINA are committed to their local community and to supporting and promoting New Zealand designers, artists and craftspeople.

Some responses

• Educating suppliers not to over invest in unwanted presentation packaging.
• Supporting and promoting New Zealand designers who support sustainable practices and use renewable resources and recycled materials.
• Using products/services from like-minded sustainable businesses where possible.
• Supporting ‘New Zealand Made’ by selling only New Zealand made art and design products and playing New Zealand music in the design store. Where possible KINA buy local.
• Actively and financially supporting several environmental and social groups within the local Taranaki region.

 The results

• KINA has established a national and international clientele with their online store and shop in New Plymouth.
• KINA educate customers and suppliers by publicly communicating sustainability successes and ongoing challenges, increasing transparency and accountability.
